Types of Bicycles: Learn More About Tandem Bikes!

A tandem bicycle is a form of bicycle designed for the purpose of being ridden by more than one person. While the most common form of the tandem bicycle seats just two people, the largest tandem bicycle seats up to thirty-five people and is over 65 feet long. Most tandem bikes seat one person in front of the next, though tandem bikes called “sociable” allow riders to sit next to one another.

The tandem bicycle has enjoyed a long and illustrious history around the world, with patents dating back to the late-19th century. While after World War II they began to decline in popularity, there was a revival in the late 1960s and it continues to have an enthusiastic following to the present. Modern technology has brought about another increase in popularity, as the modern tandem bicycle is not nearly as heavy and cumbersome as in past decades, making them appealing to serious and casual bicyclists alike.
